POLICE investigating a robbery which left a great-grandmother
with shocking injuries are examining similar incidents
for clues. Ada Smith (84) was left with a black eye and
painful bruises, after her handbag was wrenched from her
arm.
The mugger, who struck when Mrs Smith was just yards from
her home in Hanover Court, Bretton, Peterborough, has
been branded "cowardly" by police.
Today, Detective Superintendent David Hankins, of Peterborough
police, said: "From the descriptions we are getting
from other incidents, the robbery on Mrs Smith is similar.
It is not that we can say we are linking it to another
incident, but it is being investigated alongside the other
robberies."
Police are desperate for witnesses to the mugging, which
happened at about noon on Tuesday. Today, Mrs Smith said
she had been touched by the number of messages of support
she had received from well-wishers.
She said: "It's nice to know that people are thinking
about you. My daughter came to see me yesterday and I
went to get my pension. I will be a bit shaky when I go
out on my own again but I'm not going to let this beat
me."
Author and reformed gangland figure Bernard O'Mahoney
(42), from Stanground, Peterborough, was so moved by the
attack that he sent Mrs Smith a gift of £100. He
said: "I was disgusted when I saw the picture of
Ada."
Sue Bains, chairman of the Friends of Highlees School
Association, said Mr and Mrs Smith would be invited to
an OAPs' golden jubilee tea party, at the school in Ashton
Road, Westwood, on Wednesday.
Generous reader Valerie Marshall (44), of Almoners Lane,
West Town, Peterborough, has even offered Mr and Mrs Smith
a holiday to a destination of their choice to anywhere
in the UK. |
