28/09/01 - Former bouncer did not attack Murray Star slams
tabloid tale
Weekly News
Carl Eve reports
BRENTWOOD TV star Billy Murray has admitted he was assaulted
at a children's charity event - but denied reports in a Sunday
tabloid his assailant was a bouncer-turned-author from Basildon.
A source close to Murray, who found fame as bent copper Don
Beech in the long running television series the Bill, said
the report in the Sunday People was "complete rubbish".
The alleged attacker, Bernard O'Mahoney, who is called a "self-confessed
villain" in the story, said he was hundreds of miles
away at a Bible reading.
The paper reported Mr O'Mahoney went into a rage after the
actor turned his back on him at an annual charity ball in
a marquee in Chigwell, on September 15.
Murray, 55, was then "struck from behind after being
grabbed by the 20-stone hardman". The paper reported
one eye-witness as saying: "Billy was sent sprawling
on the floor and went out like a light. When he came to about
30 seconds later they had to be separated by other guests."
However, the source declared: "It's complete rubbish.
This man - who Billy knows wasn't Bernard - was being rude
to his wife, Elaine. When Billy turned around and told them
it was out of order, three big guys jumped him."
Mr O'Mahoney pointed out said he had only met the actor twice
in his life. He said: "We met once at a Kray charity
party we're both friends of the Kray family and once at the
Southend premier of the film, Essex Boys, which Bill starred
in."
"We've never fallen out and never fought. I wasn't even
in Essex on the night. I was at a Bible reading in Peterborough.
"I accept I'm not exactly anorexic, but I'm certainly
not 20 stone as reported. The newspaper story was a pile of
crap." |
