14/12/01 - Man found shot
dead in own home
Evening Echo
Detectives were today
probing the gunshot death of a man found in a pool of
blood at his south Essex home. The body of Michael "Mickey"
Roman was discovered at his £250,000 detached
house in Kennedy Avenue, Laindon. He died from a single
shot to the head.
Initially, police feared that Mr Roman, a burly figure
who ran a property maintenance company, may have been
the victim of a gangland "hit" but have now
virtually ruled out foul play. They now believe that
the wealthy businessman killed himself.
The Brentwood-based Major Investigation Team is still
looking at Mr Roman's background. Mr Roman, thought
to have been in his late 30s, was also involved in debt
collection. His body was found late Wednesday night.
A source told the Echo: "He was well known by police.
I'm surprised at the news. I really can't see him killing
himself. He always had money and if he had a problem
he could always get it sorted, or knew someone who could
help him get it sorted."
Mr Roman was also a known associate of Billericay car
dealer John Marshall, who was found shot dead in the
boot of his Range Rover five years ago. Detectives would
not say what kind of weapon was used or whether anyone
else had been in the house at the time Mr Roman died.
A post mortem examination carried out yesterday at Basildon
Hospital confirmed that he had died instantly from a
single gunshot to the head. A spokesman for Essex Police
said: "We do not believe there was foul play. We
are not looking for anyone else." |
