Sam McCrory was the leader of the outlawed Ulster Freedom Fighters in the Maze Prison where he was serving 16 years for attempted murder and possession of weapons. In May 2002 a rival Loyalist terror group (UDA) was blamed after a failed gun attack on McCrory near his home. He was later linked to the murder of the leader of the UDA.
