Sammy McCarthy (Stepney)was the British featherweight champion in 1954-55 and the British lightweight challenger in 1956. When McCarthy gave up boxing he took up armed robbery and ended up serving three terms in prison (three, six and 14 years.)

He was so popular in HMP Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight, he was released for a couple of hours to attend the prison governor's retirement party.
