08/06/04 - Author Denies Assaulting Wife During Row
By Neville Dean
The Scotsman

Author Dave Courtney cracked three of his wife's ribs after a row about her alleged lesbian affair with the former partner of EastEnders star Steve McFadden, a court heard today.

Jennifer Pinto claimed Courtney performed a “wrestling move” on her following a heated argument about his treatment of her at their home in Chestnut Rise, Plumstead, south east London, on May 9 last year.

But Courtney told police that his wife had deliberately started a fight with him because she wanted to run off “into the sunset” with Angela Bostock, the ex-partner of Mr McFadden who played Phil Mitchell in EastEnders.

In a taped interview with police played to a jury at Inner London Crown Court today Courtney claimed that his wife and Ms Bostock had been plotting together.

He told the officers that he had also been having sex with Ms Bostock, who he described as a “wedding present” from his wife.

He said that the three of them had been in a “threesome” for a couple of years but that the situation had changed after he spent more than five months in hospital following a serious car accident.

Asked about the row which led to the alleged assault, Courtney told police: “It is a sexual thing between my missus and someone else that brought this argument on.”

Questioned further about the relationship Courtney told the officers that Ms Bostock stayed at his house “all the time”.

“She was my wedding present from my missus – her husband is Steve McFadden, Phil Mitchell in EastEnders,” he said. “The two of them wanted to run off into the sunset and I was the fat cripple who had just come out of hospital who did not fit into the equation.”

The jury heard Courtney tell police how the row had begun on the morning of May 9 last year after he asked his wife for sex. He alleged that she stood him in front of the mirror and said: “You are the wrong sex.”

Courtney said that Ms Pinto was looking for an excuse to leave him and live with Ms Bostock and claimed she was looking for material about a book about his life.

In the interview he told officers how he grabbed her arm to stop her hitting him but had accidentally fallen over because he still could not walk properly following the car accident.

Courtney said he had accidentally fallen on top of his wife and that he had only been acting in self-defence.

Courtney claimed as the two were lying on the floor his wife was saying “thank you, thank you, you have given me the excuse” and “now we are going to be together, we do not want you in our relationship”.

Courtney, 45, denies assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
