23/10/03 - Killers still at large
Comet Online

POLICE hunting the killer of Stevenage businessman Dave King have now called in outside agencies to help them track down the killers.

Father-of-four Mr King, 32, died in a hail of bullets fired from a Russian-built AK47 Kalashnikov automatic rifle as he sat in a van with a friend outside a gym in Hoddesdon on October 3.

Two men being hunted for the murder used two cars to make their escape and both cars were dumped in the town and torched.

Officers leading the hunt for the killers have so far failed to uncover any motive behind the killing of the 19st body builder who lived close to his divorced parents in Stevenage.

It is understood officers leading the inquiry have called on Scotland Yard for help as Mr King, whom Herts Police say had a record of considerable criminality, had business interests in London and mixed with the capital’s underworld.

Mr King also helped run the notorious Stevenage town centre nightclub Renaissance where he provided security. The club was closed down over a year ago and was bulldozed to become a car park where the Saturday outdoor market is now held.

This week police declined to comment on how their investigation was going other than that 50 officers remained at the incident room sifting through information and that “outside agencies were helping their inquiries”.

A week after the shooting police revealed Mr King had been shot with the battlefield AK47 loaded with armour-piercing ammunition.

Another man in the van who was talking to Mr King when he was shot suffered minor injuries.

Mr King, who was born in Scotland, was also a minder to the stars including former world boxing champion Nigel Benn and is understood to have been part of the behind-the-scenes security at the Robbie Williams concerts at Knebworth in August.
