05/10/03 - Police find car
used by killers
ic Wales
Police hunting the two gunmen who killed one man and injured
another in a drive-by shooting said that they had recovered
a second vehicle used by the pair.
Known criminal David King was killed with an automatic
weapon in a gangland-style shooting in the quiet market
town of Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, on Friday morning.
The burned out silver Mercedes 180 car thought to have
been used as a second getaway vehicle was found in the
Maiden's Lane area of Bulls Cross on Saturday night.
The gunmen originally fled the murder scene in a white
Transit van, which they left burning in the Lampits
area of Hoddesdon. It is thought they abandoned the
second vehicle, again leaving it ablaze, at around 10am
the same day.
Police said that the area around the Mercedes had been
sealed off as a crime scene, and the vehicle would be
removed for forensic examination.
Bodybuilder David King, 32, thought to be a father-of-three
who lived with his young son and girlfriend in Stevenage,
was killed after two masked gunmen pulled up in a van
next to him.
His was the second death in three separate gun attacks
which rocked the country this week, sparking claims
that gun crime was now out of control in Britain.
On Tuesday, 64-year-old jeweller Marian Bates was shot
in the chest after she jumped in front of her daughter
Xanthe when a robber produced a handgun during a raid
on their shop in Arnold, Nottingham.
The latest shooting happened when three men were blasted
with a shotgun fired from a Volvo-type car in Elm Park
Road, Reading, at around 10.30pm on Friday.
One of the men had to undergo emergency surgery at the
Royal Berkshire Hospital after suffering serious facial
wounds, while the other two victims suffered shotgun wounds
to the arms and back. None sustained life threatening
injuries. Thames Valley Police said it was not known if
the shooting was drug related. However Elm Park Road lies
off Reading's notorious Oxford Road, which is known for
serious problems with drugs and prostitution. |
