bring revenge for his lifetime behind bars
The People
COLIN FRY Author of The Kray Files REGGIE Kray will have
his revenge against those who kept him caged until his
dying days. His secret book A Way of Life - due out in
November - is a damning indictment of his lifetime behind
bars.
Reggie vowed that the explosive book should not be released
while he was alive. He wrote on the cover: "Not to
be published before my death." Tragically, that wish
now looks like being fulfilled. But the book is his final
two-fingered salute to politicians and prison authorities
who showed him no compassion.
It is typical of Reggie - he has always done things his
way. Now he' s made sure that even in death, he won't
have been beaten. The book is scathing of the Home Office
and jail chiefs. Reggie has seen killings in prison -
he even had to stop riots.
And he was indelibly scarred by 16 years in solitary.
The Government has at last relented under public pressure
led by the Sunday People.
Home Secretary Jack Straw had no other option after thousands
of readers called for his release in this newspaper's
poll. But it is too little, too late. Reggie should have
been out a long, long time ago. The Kray twins' case has
always been a political issue because ministers like to
be seen to be tough on crime.
But it is a man's life they have been playing politics
with. Reggie's priority now will be Roberta - trying to
make the most of what little time they have left. His
devoted wife remains his only real comfort. They have
endured so much and now, after all the campaigning, it
is shameful that they will have so little time in each
other's arms.
Reggie could have been set free in 1996 when, painfully
frail after surgery for suspected stomach cancer, he attended
brother Charlie' s funeral. But police files on the Krays
are being kept secret for 75 years and we've got to ask
why. We've not heard the last of the case by a long shot.
