07/04/04 - UNDERWORLD: My life of vicious crime, by ex-Essex Boy
Peterborough Evening Telegraph
BERNARD O'Mahoney mixed with associates of crime legends the Kray twins, and was a part of the infamous Essex Boys gang.
He was a partner in a vicious club security firm, which ran the drugs scene in Essex in the 1990s.
They would supply the ecstasy tablet which led to the death of teenager Leah Betts in a nightclub in 1995.
Now Mr O'Mahoney has written a book – Wannabe In My Gang – which gives an insight into the London criminal underworld.
He may have retired to Stanground, Peterborough, but the former gangster has not given up living dangerously.
On the back cover of the book is written: "Kray gang boss Tony Lambrianou, who served a life sentence for the brutal murder of Jack 'The Hat' McVitie, has threatened to kill Bernard O'Mahoney by smashing a hammer through his head.
"'Dodgy' Dave Courtney, who claims to have murdered two gangland rivals, tried to put him out of his misery.
"And the most dangerous man in Britain, John 'Gaffer' Rollinson, has vowed to kill him when he finds him."
Today, Mr O'Mahoney (44) hit out at men who had cashed in by writing books glamorising organised crime, and insisted his is the truth.
He told The Evening Telegraph: "I very much regret being a part of that lifestyle. I'm not doing myself any favours coming out with this book – I actually look quite bad in it.
"But I wanted people to know exactly what kind of miserable lifestyle it is."
In Mr O'Mahoney's past, he has duped child-killer Shaun Armstrong into confessing to the murder of three-year-old Rosie Palmer.
While Armstrong waited to stand trial for the killing, Mr O'Mahoney wrote to him, pretending to be a woman, and struck up a friendship.
After more than 80 letters between the two, Armstrong finally wrote: "Yes I'm responsible for the crime, but please don't tell anyone."
He was sentenced to life in prison.
Lurid tale inspired Sean Bean movie
A FILM has been made based on the murders of three gangsters and former friends of Bernard O'Mahoney.
Essex Boys, starring Sean Bean, tells the story of three men gunned down in a Range Rover in a remote Essex country lane a decade ago.
The three – Patrick Tate, Tony Tucker and Craig Rolfe – were each shot twice in the head.
Bernard O'Mahoney has admitted he could easily have been in that car when the murders took place.
He has also written a book called Essex Boys, but the film is not based on it. |
