- Extremists under spotlight after Copeland conviction
As neo-Nazi nailbomber David Copeland begins six life
sentences, police say they are to increase surveillance
of far-right hate groups. The Met say they have learned
lessons from the case of Copeland, who killed three
people and injured 139 in London with nailbombs aimed
at black, Asian and gay people.
Concerns over the police investigation have been prompted
by revelations that reliable sources named Copeland
as a prime suspect just hours before his final bomb
killed three people.
Alan Fry, the Met's deputy assistant commander, said:
"He had it primed, there's no way we could have
prevented him at that time. He had set out on his evil
mission and could not be stopped."
Copeland, an engineer from Cove, Hants, claimed he was
criminally not responsible because he was mentally ill.
But the jury at his Old Bailey trial decided he was
bad not mad. |
