28/06/00 - Fantasy of Soho
bomber
The Mirror
SOHO bomber David Copeland had sex fantasies where he
raped and murdered women, a court heard yesterday.
Copeland, who killed three people and injured 129 in
three explosions, dreamed of being an SS colonel and
playing God.
Psychologist Jackie Craissati said 24-year-old Copeland
was a sexual inadequate who was terrified of having
a normal relationship.
She told the Old Bailey: "He said he had violent
fantasies in which he would drug women so they were
sexually compliant. In the most common, he would be
God and he was able to choose the pretty women. In another,
he was in the SS and he would pick a victim, rape her
and shoot her dead."
Mrs Craissati examined Copeland a month after he was
arrested for three nailbomb attacks on black, Asian
and gay targets in London last year.
He told her he thought about bomb-making "95 per
cent of the time".
She added: "He had extreme political and racist
beliefs and his desire to maim and kill people was related
to his failures in late adolescence."
She said Copeland told her that he feared in his youth
that people would think he was gay.
He killed three people when his nailbomb tore apart
the Admiral Duncan gay pub in Soho.
Copeland had previously planted bombs in Brixton and
Brick Lane, heartlands of London's black and Asian communities.
Mrs Craissati said he was "phlegmatic" about
spending the rest of his life behind bars. She added:
"He thought the world was going to collapse. He
was going nowhere and achieving nothing."
She said Copeland, of Cove, Hants, found it "difficult
to experience pleasure or express warmth."
She added: "He withdrew into a world of fantasy.
"He was beset with overwhelming anxieties regarding
his sexual orientation.
"He had an anxiety that he would be mocked and
humiliated in any intimate relationship."
But Mrs Craissati, who was called by the prosecution,
could find "no obvious signs of mental illness".
Defence psychiatrists have argued that Copeland was
insane at the time of the bombings. He denies murder
but admits manslaughter on the grounds of diminished
responsibility.
The trial continues
