Gay Times
Bernard O'Mahoney
(Mainstream Publishing, £9.99)
This story is chilling in so many ways. It's a behind-the-scenes, down-and-nasty-with-Nazi-thugs expose. Basically, it's the story of how David Copeland, the Admiral Duncan, Brixton and Brick Lane nail bomber, was snared, and tells how author and former nightclub bouncer O'Mahoney made the slow change from vicious bonehead Fascist to Fascist opponent.
O'Mahoney, who'd already been involved in the successful prosecution of two child-killers, writes letters to Copeland on remand, pretending to be a petite 20-year-old called "Patsy".
Copeland and "Patsy" engage in a passionate correspondence, during which Copeland, thinking he's writing to the love of his life, confesses to the bombings. How stupid can you get?
Hateland shows this country's dark, ugly underbelly. It throws up many moral issues, the least of which is, was Copeland a victim of entrapment? And what are the acceptable paths to redemption?
It's a perverse, violent read, often darkly comic, brimming with frustration, disenfranchisement, frustration - and just plain nastiness. Read it and weep. |
