- Internet sites gave Copeland bomb-making instructions
David Copeland was a man of few talents, floating between
jobs and without the knowledge or ability to make an
indelible mark on society, but he needed help to carry
out his destructive bombing campaign.
He did not need to look far for assistance. Soon after
his arrest it emerged that he had constructed crude
explosive devices using information from the internet.
Copeland from Cove, Farnborough, Hants, received six
life sentences after being found guilty of three murders.
He admitted causing explosions at Brixton, Brick Lane
and Soho, London, in April last year. The prosecution
refused to accept his plea of guilty to manslaughter
on the grounds he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.
His parents had bought a computer to help him and his
two brothers with their homework as they grew up, but
it had no internet link. He gathered the information
while visiting an internet cafe.
Feeding the key word "bomb" into the search
engines the internet brought up a dizzying number of
sites showing how to make explosive devices. |
