01/07/00 - Mother so close to death
By OONAGH BLACKMAN and JEFF EDWARDS, Chief Crime Correspondent
The Mirror

IN a bizarre twist to the horror, Copeland nearly claimed the lives of his own mother and cousin. Caroline Copeland was close to the bustling pavement cafes of Soho when her misfit son's campaign of terror reached its gruesome finale.

Like many others that evening she had strolled into London's West End for a drink with friends. The hairdresser mother-of-three was recovering from a bitter divorce and the party atmosphere on the streets was just the tonic she needed.

But when a friend suggested moving on to Soho, Scots-born Caroline, 47, said no. Copeland's father Steve said: "She was in Covent Garden at the time of the Soho attack, she was so close.

"She is very upset, very distraught. She's been on medication since David was arrested." On April 17, 1999, he had struck in Brixton, knowing that his young cousin lived there. Kelly, 29, been planning to go to the shopping centre the day 40 people were injured.

David's grandfather William said: "What was he thinking of? It's bad enough to do what he did, but surely he knew Kelly lived there and could have been with her children. It is horrible."
