- Nail bomber begins life behind bars
Neo-Nazi nailbomber David Copeland begins life behind
bars in Broadmoor having secured his aim of becoming
famous. The 24-year-old was given six life sentences
at the Old Bailey for planting nail bombs which killed
three people.
His room in Broadmoor is decorated with a Nazi flag.
The Home Office agreed he should be held at the top
security hospital so his personality disorder can be
treated. Copeland could spend at least a decade at Broadmoor
before doctors consider he is safe enough to go into
the prison system.
The time he serves in jail will be decided by the Home
Secretary on the recommendation of the judge. Copeland's
father Stephen, 51, is expected to visit the hospital.
Mr Copeland extended his sympathies to the victims'
families but said he could never turn his back on his
son.
"I will support him for ever as a father. You can't
wash your hands of a child," he said. Copeland
stood stony-faced and emotionless as he was given life
sentences for murdering Andrea Dykes, 27, John Light,
32, and Nicholas Moore, 31.
Copeland, an engineer from Cove, Farnborough, Hants,
was jailed for life for planting nailbombs at the Admiral
Duncan pub in London's Soho, and two similar devices
at Brixton and Brick Lane in April last year.
He had admitted carrying out the attacks which left
139 people injured. He told police he wanted to be an
infamous murderer and to start a race and homophobic
war in Britain.
Victim Julian Dykes, who was not in court to hear the
verdict, was unconscious for three weeks after the bombing
and regained consciousness only to learn that his wife
and their unborn baby had died along with two friends.
