23/06/00 - Nail bomber had
gun 'to kill Blair'
By Sue Clough, Courts Correspondent
The Telegraph
DAVID COPELAND, the nail bomber, got a gun to
assassinate Tony Blair after rejecting the idea of a Hungerford-style
shooting spree in case he was killed, an Old Bailey jury
was told yesterday.
Dr Philip Joseph, a psychiatrist called by the prosecution,
said that Copeland claimed to have told police that
he had planted bombs in Brixton, Brick Lane and a gay
pub in Soho because "I knew it would piss everyone
off, especially, like, Blair and Mandelson and them
lot, Mr Boateng".
Copeland explained that he thought Mr Mandelson was
homosexual and Mr Boateng was black. He said he had
got a pistol to assassinate the Prime Minister after
rejecting the idea of a shooting rampage. He has admitted
planting nail bombs in Brixton and Brick Lane.
The third bomb at the Admiral Duncan killed three people.
Copeland, 24, an engineer from Cove, Hants, has admitted
their manslaughter but the prosecution refused to accept
his plea, saying he was guilty of murder.
The trial continues. |
