22/06/00 - Nail bomber said he had gun to kill Blair, court told

London nail bomber David Copeland claimed he had a gun to kill Prime Minister Tony Blair, a psychiatrist has told an Old Bailey jury. A pistol was found in Copeland's bedroom after his arrest.

It was not lethal, but he had instructions downloaded from the internet showing how to make it so, the prosecution has alleged. Copeland, 24, an engineer from Cove, Farnborough, Hants, has admitted three bomb explosions in Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho last year in which three people died and 129 were injured.

He is being tried for murder after the prosecution refused to accept his guilty pleas to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Dr Philip Joseph said he had asked Copeland why he told police he carried out his bombing spree because he wanted "to piss everyone off, especially like Blair and Mandelson and them lot, Mr Boateng".

Copeland explained he thought Mr Mandelson was allegedly homosexual and Mr. Boateng was black. The prosecution allege Copeland targeted racial minorities and homosexuals during his bombing campaign in April last year.
