- No emotion from nail bomber Copeland as he gets six
life sentences
Ananova
Nail bomber David Copeland has been sentenced to a total
of six life sentences for a bombing campaign which killed
three people during a 13-day reign of terror in London.
Copeland, 24, a self-confessed fascist, showed no emotion
as the jury of four women and eight men returned their
unanimous verdicts at the Old Bailey. The 24-year-old
from Cove, Farnborough, Hants, had admitted causing explosions
at Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho, London, in April last
year.
The prosecution refused to accept his plea of guilty to
manslaughter on the grounds he was suffering from paranoid
schizophrenia. Judge Michael Hyam told Copeland that no-one
could fail to be horrified by the atrocities of his crimes,
which left 139 people injured.
"Nothing can excuse or justify the evil you have
done and certainly not the abhorrent views which you have
embraced," he said. "It is only too apparent
from what you have said you have no feelings for those
lives you have afflicted.
"The public must be protected from you and assured
that if you are ever released it will not be for a very
long time. You set out to kill, maim and cause terror
in the community and that is what you did.
"As a result of your wicked intentions, you have
left three families bereaved and many people who were
so severely injured that they are reminded every day and
perhaps many times every day that you alone are accountable
for ruining their lives.
" The jury took six-and-a-half hours of deliberations
to reach their verdict, and were applauded by victims
and their relatives. The blast at the mainly gay Admiral
Duncan pub in Soho killed Andrea Dykes, 27, who was pregnant,
and friends John Light, 32 and Nik Moore, 31, from Essex.
Copeland will start his life sentences in Broadmoor high
security hospital. |
