21/06/00 - Nazi nailbomber faked madness to avoid jail, But killer found Broadmoor worse
The Mirror

NAZI nailbomber David Copeland faked mental illness to get into Broadmoor - but then found it worse than prison, a court heard yesterday.

After being moved, he pleaded with doctors at the top-security hospital to return him to jail, it was alleged.

Copeland, 24, who killed three people with a bomb left in a Soho pub, told Broadmoor psychiatrist Dr Andrew Payne: "I am a sane man. I'm a Nazi who likes killing people. I have no remorse." He was originally held at London's tough Belmarsh prison following his arrest last year for the nailbomb attacks.

But he was moved to Broadmoor after telling doctors that God had chosen him to spark a race war by targeting blacks, Asians and gays.

Inmates at Belmarsh had suggested to him that he try for a transfer, the Old Bailey heard.

Copeland allegedly told doctors: "I didn't know what it was like. Now I think it's a hundred times worse than prison and I want to go back.

"I told people what they wanted to hear. I like tricking and confusing people."

Three people died when Copeland, of Cove, Hants planted a nailbomb at the Admiral Duncan gay pub in Soho in April last year. Pregnant bride Andrea Dykes, 27, died along with John Light, 32, the best man at her wedding and Nicholas Moore, 31, a gay pal.

Copeland also injured 50 people with devices in Brixton and Brick Lane.

He denies murder but admits manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
