??/??/?? - Operation Marathon: Interviews with David Copeland

The following are extracts from police interviews with David Copeland at various times following his arrest. Copeland's own statements in these interviews contributed to a vast body of material about his motivations and state of mind during the bombings which led a jury to conclude that although his ideas and thinking were a long way from what we might consider reasonable or normal he was a murderer who was fully responsible for his actions.

Copeland was arrested and cautioned at his home in Sunnybank Road where he told police:

“Yeah, they’re all down to me. I did them on my own.”

As to why he planted the devices Copeland said:

“Terrorism. Fear. To terrorise people.”

“I wanted to be famous ….. I believe in what I believed in and I took that belief to the extreme…..”

“… I believe it’s my destiny…. political reasons … you know I am a Nazi I admit that.”

“Just political. I wanted to be famous…. I believe in what I believed in, and I took that belief to the extreme. That’s the only way I can put it.”

“I did do it politically. You know if I just wanted to blow things up I’d have blown white people up you know.”

When asked what he had intended to cause by the explosions he said:

“Murder, mayhem, chaos, damage, to get on the news…..It’s a top story really.”

“My main intent was to spread fear, resentment, and hatred throughout this country.”

When asked about the bombs and why he had put nails in them Copeland said:

“… they were lethal bombs. It’s the only sort of bombs I could make at the time…It means they’d smash windows, stick into people, and maim people… And kill people.”

When asked if he was part of an organisation he said:

“No.. I wouldn’t trust any of those idiots. They’re just a bunch of yobs that’s all they are.”

Later he went on:

“I’ve never even heard of the White Wolves until a few days afterwards when … it first come out… I don’t have a clue who they are, I don’t know anyone in C18…..Just trying to …take my glory.

When asked if his aim was more than to plant bombs and hurt people Copeland said:

“…I’d just be the spark, that’s all I would plan to be. The spark that would set fire to this country.”

“That’s right. May aim was political. It was to cause a racial war in this country. “

When asked what he believed in he said:

“A national socialist state… For this country, well for the entire world… it means the aryan domination of the world. “

“…I do predominantly say that the white race is the master race.”

“I think perfectly British people have the right to ethnic cleanse.”

When asked to name his heroes he replied:

“Adolf Hitler…..And Sadam Hussein is one of my heroes…. They’re just real dictators. They’re … strong people…”

When asked why he targeted ethnic minority communities he said:

“… I don’t like them. I want them out of this country. I’m a national socialist. Nazi whatever you want to call me. You know what I mean I believe in a really master race… “

When asked how he perceived ethnic minority communities he said:

“… they are inferior…….In everything really…”

When asked if he was looking out for CCTV or the police when carrying the bombs Copeland said:

“Not really no. Personally I wanted to get caught …..To be famous in some sort of way …..If no-one remembers who you were, you never existed.”

“… after a while … I became that thought. You know I was gonna do it. I was gonna get it out my head, and the only way to get rid of it was to do it.”

Asked about press cuttings and other items he had kept:

“Bombing things, atrocities, picture of burnt up bodies things like that… I just, I just liked them… They’re just morbid ain’t they?”

“… for some reasons I stuck them up, I don’t … really know why. I just saw them and I like the pictures. You know it’s just evil you know, I mean people suffering.”

Copeland explained how he picked his targets:

“I knew that Brixton was the focal point for the black community. I knew that Brick Lane was [the] focal point for the Asian community. I knew that Soho was [the] focal point for the gay community …..”

When asked about planting the bomb in Brixton Copeland said:

“…I put it there to get the people, the people walking by and the people at the bus stop.”

When asked about the Brick Lane bomb Copeland said:

“… I didn’t want to kill anyone but if anyone did die it wouldn’t have bothered me.”

When asked bout the Soho bomb he said:

“… I knew that people would be out, people would be killed, but I had to do it. It just wouldn’t leave my mind.”

Asked about his views of homosexuals Copeland said:

“I’m just very homophobic … I just hate them.”

“I, I chose the gays ‘cos I hate them though. You know I mean that was personal, I’m sorry to say it was, but it was.”

He described homosexuals as:

“… perverted [and] degenerates.”

When asked about the time he spent in the Admiral Duncan before the explosion, Copeland responded:

“I see the people I was going to maim and kill …..I didn’t’ feel joy about it …. I didn’t feel sad. I just didn’t feel anything.”

When asked about the three people who died he said:

“I feel nothing. I don’t feel sadness but I don’t feel joy. I did what I had to do… I’m sorry for the woman and the child. I think the woman was pregnant. I feel sorry for her. But I don’t feel no guilt for the others…I’m sorry for the baby as well. …But no one else. You know that’s it. I mean I knew they’d be casualties and I’m very glad that the child will make a full recovery.”

He later described his actions by saying:

“It was my destiny…”

“I couldn’t help it, I had to do it…. you know I’m not gonna sit here and lie to you, but you know they’re dead, they’re dead. I feel nothing about it.”
