- The bomb was right at the back of us, yards away'
South London Press
THE SLP spoke to two people caught up in the bombing about
their feelings now Copeland has been caged. George Jones
lives in Brockley but was helping a Mend on a stall the
day the bomb went off.
Incredibly, the brave 43-year-old actually moved the bomb,
warning people of the imminent danger before it exploded.
Mr Jones was among 50 people injured by nails that were
sent flying in all directions when the bomb went off.
He said: "I lost two toes and the hearing was damaged
in both my ears, which I'll never get back. I had nails
in my legs and in the back of my coat. I'll never forget
it and I'm just glad it's all over and done with. I'm
lucky to be alive and every day is a bonus." Mr Jones
admitted he is still very angry about what Copeland did.
Dennis Costello, 64, runs a fruit and veg stall in Brixton
Market and was among those who looked inside the 'Head'
bag containing the bomb before it exploded. He said: "It
was frightening. I've been on the market for quite a few
years and have been through all the riots, but that was
really, really frightening.
It was right next to us. "I lost quite a bit of stock
in the explosion, it was about £2,000 worth. My
van also got blown up. "The bomb was right at the
back of us, yards away. It was at the back of my stall
and at one stage was underneath my stall.
"It was frightening because no one believed it was
a bomb. "We were really lucky in some ways in Brixton,
unlike in the West End where people died." Mr Costello
feel's bitter about Copeland, but said: "Brixton
is getting back together now." |
