- Climbie council 'withheld documents'
The council at the centre of the Victoria Climbie child
abuse scandal has been accused of withholding key documents
from the inquiry into her death. Haringey Council failed
to produce two documents on time which detailed how its
practices had changed after the eight-year-old's death.
Inquiry chairman Lord Laming has ordered the council to
bring every relevant missing file to the witness stand
on Monday. If the council's social services director Anne
Bristow fails to comply, she faces up to six months in
prison.
The hearing was adjourned this morning while the barrister
leading the inquiry obtained two missing documents, both
of which were dated from over four months ago.
Counsel to the hearing Neil Garnham QC said: "The
implication must be, therefore, that it has been in Miss
Bristow's or Haringey Council's hands for some time. I
fear we are being drip-fed information again.
"It cannot conceivably be said that this document
is irrelevant because it plainly goes to the question
of the lessons which Haringey have learned or not learned
as a result of the death of Victoria Climbie.
"The problem multiplies because this document in
turn refers to four more documents which we do not appear
to have received." He added that Rose Kozinos, acting
senior manager for Haringey's Investigation and Assessment
team, had been asking for a copy of the report since the
summer.
He said: "It has never been disclosed to her. So
make of that what you will." |
