By MARTIN WALLACE
The Sun
THE scientist whose skill nailed Whiting yesterday told
of his painstaking search tor evidence. Forensic expert
Ray Chapman, 44, spent five months checking fibres before
finding one that linked Whiting to Sarah.
It was a further nine months before he and six assistants
finished tests on fibres from Whiting's van and matched
them to items in Sarah's hair, a body bag used to recover
her remains and her shoe. In all, police sent Mr Chapman's
team 500 items for analysis.
But the most damning evidence was a single blonde hair,
measuring 23cms, that was found on the front of a red
sweatshirt which had been discarded in Whiting's van.
Mr Chapman, who works at the Forensic Science laboratory
in Lambeth, South Londan, said: "It provided a
fun DNA profile just matched Sarah." Mr Chapman
said the evidence he found "showed very strong
support for Sarah having been in the van."
He added: "That's as far as we go, the rest was
down to the jury." |
