SARAH Payne's jailed killer is scarred for life after a fellow inmate slashed him in the face with a home-made blade. Hated paedophile Roy Whiting, 42, was standing on a landing when he was grabbed and had both corners of his mouth savagely cut in a wound known to cons as a "Chelsea smile".

He needed more than 15 stitches. Whiting, who kidnapped and murdered eight-year-old Sarah two years ago, was given first aid at the scene before being taken to hospital. A prison source said: "Whiting was targeted. It was a nasty attack but these things happen. "He had deep cuts to the corner of his mouth and will be scarred for life." The attack took place on Sunday when Whiting, normally segregated from other prisoners, was on a communal landing.

Police returned to the jail yesterday to speak to him. Prison officers are searching for the blade, which may have been made in a workshop. Yesterday the Prison Officers' Association called for tighter security inside jails in the wake of the attack.

A spokesman said: "This shouldn't have happened. "Prisoners are remarkably skilled at making knives. The usual trick is to get a disposable razor blade and make a handle from a toothbrush."

When Whiting was held at Wormwood Scrubs, inmates had to sign a "contract" agreeing not to harm him. If they refused, they lost privileges. The Prison Service said: "A Wakefield prisoner was taken to hospital following an allegation of assault.

The incident is being investigated." Whiting, jailed for life in December, snatched Sarah as she played with her brothers and sister near her grandparents' home in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex. Her body was found 16 days later.
