07/12/01 - Jigsaw of evidence damns
Sarah killer
By MARTIN WALLACE and IAN HEPBURN
The Sun
A COMPELLING "jigsaw of evidence" proved that
Roy Whiting murdered Sarah Payne, a jury heard yesterday.
Prosecutor Timothy Langdale QC said there were so many
pieces "the picture itself emerges with clarity".
Mr Langdale branded Whiting a shifty liar as he listed
the evidence against the 42-year-old mechanic in his
closing speech. He reminded the jury of the FORENSIC
clues - including 22 fibres which the court was told
linked Whiting to eight-year-old Sarah.
The QC accused Whiting of CHANGING his story about what
he was doing the day Sarah was snatched near her grandparent's
home in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex. He said: "He
was shifty in the answers he gave you from the witness
box.
It was because he wasn't telling the truth," Then
there was the RECEIPT for diesel Whiting bought at 10pm
on the evening Sarah was abducted. Mr Langdale urged
the jury to remember Whiting made no mention of it when
police went to his flat the next day.
The garage was just two miles from where Sarah's naked
body was found in a shallow grave 16 days later. The
QC said it was "obvious" why Whiting wanted
to keep the receipt from police. He told Lewes Crown
Court: "Nobody save the man who had done it knew
where Sarah's body had been buried."
The jury was reminded of ITEMS found in Whiting's van
- black plastic ties, rope and baby oil. And the QC
accused Whiting of being on the PROWL for children,
visiting a beach, three parks and a funfair, on the
day Sarah was snatched.
Other pieces of the jigsaw included the fact Whiting
had worked for months close to where Sarah was kidnapped,
it was said. He also knew the area where her body was
dumped but had persisted in "evasions and deceits"
about his knowledge, said the QC.
The prosecutor added it was only when Whiting took the
witness stand that he admitted stripping out the interior
of his van the day after Sarah disappeared. He claimed
Whiting had not wanted police to know at the time in
case they found the panelling,
Finally the QC said it was the strand of Sarah's HAIR
found on Whiting's sweatshirt that was "fatal"
to the defence. He insisted: "There is compelling
evidence that the defendant is indeed the man responsible
for these crimes."Whiting, of Littlehampton, denies
kidnap and murder.
Trial continues. |
