- Judge: You are menace to every little girl

THE judge who jailed Whiting for life branded him evil
and said the brute would forever remain a menace to little
girls. Mr Justice Curtis said the monster had converted
his van into a mobile prison to satisfy his depraved lust.
And he blasted the pervert as a "cunning and glib
liar." This is what the judge told him in full: "You
have had a fair trial. I deliberately ordered this case
tried on the facts of this murder and kidnap and not on
your record which the jury have now heard read out in
court. You are every parent's, every grandparent's nightmare
come true.
It is important in ordinary life that children are allowed
some freedom by their parents in order to learn self reliance
and to enjoy their childhood doing things on their own.
You have exploited this for your own abnormal sexual desires.
I am satisfied you were looking for such a child that
evening along the south coast here in Sussex.
You had that van. It is ludicrous to suggest you needed
it for the job you had to do. It was a moving prison for
her and anyone else you caught. You were intelligent enough
to know from your previous brush with the law you were
more likely to be caught if you used a car.
In it you had that rope, knife, some ties and soft material
that could go in the back as cushioning. One of the many
articles in it had a small trace of semen upon it. You
got rid of all the evidence by pressure washing the van
and getting rid of all her clothes and removing the panelling
and back doors in order to destroy any evidence that Sarah
Payne had been in that van.
You stripped her naked after you had suffocated her and
buried her and got rid of her clothing. You are indeed
an evil man. What is worse is that in 1995 you did the
same thing. That girl, mercifully, you did not kill. The
medical evidence is you are in no way mentally unwell.
I have seen you now for months or more and heard you give
evidence.
I think you are a cunning and glib liar. I have a psychiatric
report on you to assist me. Included in it is the undoubted
fact that in June 1995 a pyschiatrist assessed you as
being a high risk repeat offender and how right he was.
In my judgment you are, and will remain, an absolute menace
to any little girl. This is one of the rare cases that
I shall recommend to the appropriate authorities that
you be kept in prison for the rest of your life so that
no third child is added to your list of victims and the
lives of a third family are not ruined." |
