06/12/01 - Moment he finally said name Sarah
By Antonella Lazzeri
at Lewes Crown Court
The Sun

LIKE a stern headmaster speaking to a boy, prosecutor Timothy Langdale led Roy Whiting through the catalogue of forensic evidence police claim proves he is a killer. Peering over his spectacles he asked Whiting: "All unfortunate coincidence Mr Whiting? These fibres linking you to this girl?"

Whiting told him firmly: "Yes!" Mr Langdale ploughed on, Later, turning towards him with a flourish, Mr Langdale paused before saying firmly: "The game was up wasn't it!" All eyes in the hushed courtroom swivelled in Whiting's direction.

"No," he said quietly, before staring down at a chart showing how fibres from Sarah's sweatshirt, silver puffa-style jacket, his red sweatshirt and a curtain figured in the case.

Mr Langdale, who looks like an old version of actor lan McShane, continued: "It is just coincidence is it that a fibre that was indistinguishable from the clown-patterned curtain in your van was found on the velcro strap of that shoe?"

Whiting shrugged so demonstratively that it caused Mr Langdale to boom out across the court: "Oh, I see you shrug!" For 20 relentless minutes he asked Whiting how he could explain why fibres matching items from his van were found on items linked with Sarah.

Peering at Whiting, now rubbing his jean-clad knees continously, he told him: "Some 22 fibres in all, that can't be coincidence?"

Whiting attempted an explanation, but Mr Langdale cut him short and said: "You just can't admit it can you?" In reply Whiting used Sarah's name for the first time while giving evidence. "You don't know what Sarah picked up in the 8-12 weeks she had the shoes."

Looking towards Sarah's family in the well of the court, he added: "Or on her clothes the day before she went down to Kingston Gorse." Sarah's mother cuddled into husband Michael. He gently put his arm round her and held her close.
