03/09/99 - Memorial to murder
victim vandalised
BBC News
A seafront memorial to seven-year-old murder victim Sophie
Hook in north Wales has been attacked. Police said a heavy
instrument may have been used to cause £300 damage
to the memorial to the girl who was murdered in Llandudno
four years ago.
The £5,000 memorial is in a shelter used by children
and their parents alongside the paddling pool at Craig
y Don, Llandudno, near where Sophie was found murdered.
She had been snatched from the tent where she was sleeping
in the garden of her family's home.
The memorial, in concrete, glass and resin, had only been
in place since last month and has now been taken away
for repair. Police said the memorial was damaged between
early on Thursday evening and early on Friday morning.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve Beedham of Llandudno said
he was anxious to hear from anyone who can help to solve
the mystery. Sophie's parents, who live in Cheshire, have
been told of the vandalism. A local man, Howard Hughes,
was convicted of the murder and jailed for life. |
