05/09/01 - No appeal for Sophie's
killer
THE killer of seven-year-old schoolgirl Sophie Hook has
failed in an attempt to overturn his conviction. Howard
Hughes, of Colwyn Bay, was given three life sentences
at Chester Crown Court in July 1996 for the double rape
and murder of little Sophie, who was taken from a tent
in her uncle's garden in Llandudno while she slept a year
earlier.
The Criminal Cases Review Commission confirmed they had
received an application from Hughes's solicitors asking
for the case to be reconsidered, but had decided not to
refer it to the Court of Appeal.
Sophie was camping with her sister and cousin in a tent
in her uncle's secluded garden after a children's party
in 1995. She was taken by Hughes while she was still asleep
before being brutally raped and strangled.
Her body was found washed up on the beach nearby the next
morning. Handing out to Hughes three life sentences, Mr
Justice Richard Curtis said he was a "fiend".
"Your crimes are every parent's nightmare come to
pass. No girl is or ever will be safe from you."
In March 1998, the Court of Appeal threw out Howard Hughes's
bid to have his conviction overturned. |
