09/04/01 - Outcry over WPC
Hendon & Finchley Times
A leading Haringey Tory said the appointment of under-fire
WPC Karen Jones to the Metropolitan Police training centre
in Hendon "beggars belief".
WPC Jones began work at the centre in Aerodrome Road
three weeks ago, after more than three months on sick
leave.
She was severely criticised for her role in investigating
the abuse of murdered eight-year-old Anna Climbie, which
was described by Home Office pathologist Dr Nathaniel
Carey as the "worst case of child abuse I have
ever seen".
She still faces possible disciplinary action after
being severely criticised at the Old Bailey for allowing
Anna to be released back into the care of her killers
Marie Therese Kouao, 44, and Carl Manning, 28, of Tottenham.
The court heard how WPC Jones failed to visit their
home because she feared catching scabies.
Councillor Peter Forrest said: "This officer's
conduct during the torture of Anna Climbie, especially
her failure to visit Anna's home, calls her judgment
into serious question.
"It beggars belief that she be let anywhere near
impressionable new recruits."
A police spokesman said WPC Jones who had reportedly
received death threats following the case had taken
up a "support role" at the centre.
Health secretary Alan Milburn launched an inquiry into
the case in January. It will examine the actions of
the local councils involved as well as the police and
NHS.
"It would be inappropriate for me to discuss further
issues relating to the case while this inquiry and a Metropolitan
Police disciplinary inquiry are under way." |
