- PCC pulls up newspaper over pic
The Hartlepool Mail has been brought to book by the
Press Complaints Commission for publishing a photograph
without consent of a surviving sister of a murdered
young girl.
The girl's mother, Beverley Palmer, said the picture,
taken with a long lens camera, was in breach of Clause
4 of the Code dealing with privacy and Clause 12 covering
the photographing of children.
Palmer explained that her extreme concern was for her
child's safety, since her other had been murdered, and
the paper had promised never to publish her surviving
child's facial image. The late editor of the paper removed
the picture from the second edition of The Hartlepool
Mail.
The PCC upheld her complaint. Peter Barron, the current
editor of The Hartlepool Mail, tells BJP: 'I was not
in charge of the paper at the time of the complaint
so I cannot comment directly on the case. But I will
say that we are being more careful about the type of
pictures we use and the circumstances in which they
were obtained.' |
