29/03/02 - Policeman committed for trial on corruption charges
The Western Mail

A POLICE constable was yesterday committed for trial on two charges of corruption. David Gardner, 33, of Llanrwst Road, Colwyn Bay, was charged with selling to a national newspaper a police photograph of the child killer Howard Hughes, along with other information.

He is accused of corruptly obtaining £5,000 from representatives of the former Today newspaper. It is alleged that between July 1995 and July 1996, he handed over copies of confidential police and Clwyd social services reports on Hughes.

Gardner, who was granted bail by Llandudno court on condition he does not approach two journalists and a Nicola Daffern, will appear at Caernarfon Crown court for a plea and directions hearing at the end of April.

Sophie Hook, 7, was murdered in summer, 1995, after she was snatched from a tent in her uncle's back garden at Llandudno. Hughes is serving three life sentences for the rape and murder of Sophie Hook.
