27/10/92 - Pure Evil
Daily Sport

A SEX fiend with a morbid liking for little boys was jailed for life yesterday for strangling a friendly seven-year-old. A judge recommended that evil Richard Blenkey should stay behind bars for at least 20 years. Blenkey, 33, killed little Paul Pearson in a terrifying attack in a ramshackle chicken hut on his allotment.

The boy's tracksuit bottoms, underpants, shoes and socks had been removed and there were signs he was victim of a sex act, Stephen Williamson, prosecuting, said. Unemployed Blenkey, of Diamond Street, Saltburn was trapped by a palm print found on the crossbar of the boy's bike dumped in a gulley by his body.

A sock and the underpants were found in the shed. But bachelor Blenkey always denied the killing until the start of his trial yesterday when he changed his plea to guilty. Teesside Crown Court heard that Paul was throttled with a length of garden twine in the hut which he had to pass while cycling home to Marske, Cleveland, from a pal's house in nearby Saltburn.

Paul had only moved to the area with his parents, Ken and Julie Pearson, a fortnight before the horror killing. The boy had quickly made friends and had earlier gone to pick peas with a chum's family on Blenkey's allotment. The man who led the hunt for the killer, Det Chief Insp Alan Walls, said Blenkey had the appearance of a clean-living bachelor but was, in fact, "pure evil".

The loner, who lived with his widowed mother, spent most of his time on the allotments. He was well-known for befriending children and had a previous court appearance 14 years ago over an incident when he took another boy of seven into woods. The lad ran off after kicking Blenkey who was charged by the police and appeared before magistrates for breach of the peace.

The man had never given a reason for his attack on Paul, Mr Walls said. "But there can be no doubt what was in the mind of this man who is very dangerous to children, particularly young boys," he added. Barrie Stewart, defending, said psychiatric tests had shown Blenkey to be almost sub-normal though there was no evidence of mental illness.

"We are dealing with a pathetic, very immature young man of limited intelligence," he said. Sentencing him, the judge, Mr Justice Blofeld said Blenkey had committed "a most appalling murder" and Paul, of Grenville Close, Marske had suffered "a terrifying experience" as he was strangled for sexual gratification.
