27/10/92 - Pure Evil
By CLIVE CRICKMER
Daily Mirror

A SEX monster branded "pure evil" by a police chief was jailed for life yesterday for the brutal murder of a seven year-old boy he befriended. Jobless bachelor Richard Blenkey, 33, changed his plea to guilty after detectives learned of an amazing confession he wrote to a penpal from jail only 11 days before his trial.

The depraved loner had stubbornly denied strangling little Paul Pearson with red twine in an allotment chicken hut. But his resolve began to crack when he replied to 36 letters sent by a stranger who has repeatedly written to people in notorious cases. Blenkey poured out his heart and admitted that he was the killer.

He stood expressionless in the dock at Teesside Crown Court as Mr Jus tice Blofield recommended that he should stay behide bars for at least 20 years. The judge said Blenkey showed a "morbid interest in young boys".

He committed "appalling murder" after luring Paul into the hut for his sexual gratification. He befriended Paul, whose family had moved only a fortnight earlier from Thornaby, Cleveland, to a new home in Marske 15 miles away.

Ironically his parents, Ken and Julie, moved to the small seaside town because they thought it would be SAFER for their four children. And last night the couple said Blenkey should be hanged. Electrician Ken, 31, declared: "The punishment should fit the crime. He killed Paul and should pay for it with his life "

Julie, also 31, added: "The death penalty should be brought back for crimes like this a life for a life. The world would be a safer place to bring up children." Paul got to know Blenkey through a friend whose father had the adjoining allotment. He gave him peas as a reward for picking vegetables and even met the little boy's mum.

She did not realise he was regarded locally as an oddball who had been bound over by magistrates for abducting a boy he took into the woods. Paul vanished as he cycled home after playing with a chum in August last year. The bike and his seminaked body were found the next day in an overgrown 50ft ravine.

Prosecuting counsel said a local man heard what sounded like sobbing coming from the chicken hut as he walked by with his dogs. A short time later he looked back and saw Blenkey acting strangely.

Detectives found Paul's socks and underpants in the hut and there was strong physical evidence including a palm print on the bike handlebars to incriminate his killer. But still Blenkey denied the murder. . . until the confession he wrote in prison was revealed.
