20/08/95 - Rosie's killer on hunger strike in jail
By GARY JONES
Chief Crime Reporter
News of the World

EVIL Tony Armstrong has gone on hunger strike claiming he wants to die for murdering little Rosie Palmer. Armstrong, 33, confessed to a News of the World reporter before his trial. Now he has told her: "I have been on total hunger strike, with no food and nothing to drink.

I haven't begun to feel really bad, that will take another few days. "This is the only thing that I can think of that will in some way pay for what I did. "I admit my guilt but I should also try and atone in some way."

Rosie, three, was killed in Hartlepool, Cleveland, in July last year. Armstrong planned to fake madness to get a sentence for manslaughter, but he pleaded guilty to murder instead after we revealed his plan.

He had admitted his sickening crime in besotted letters to the woman reporter whom he thought was a pen-pal. Prison chiefs now believe Armstrong may commit suicide and he has been moved to a secure cell in Wakefield jail.

He wrote: "They have got me in a strip cell with nothing except a couple of blankets. "It's one hell of a place to spend your final days."
