- Strangler finally confessed in letter from prison
Daily Telegraph
BLENKEY admitted his guilt to the horrifying murder of
Paul Pearson in a letter to a man in Basildon, Essex who
makes a hobby of writing to criminals awaiting trials
for highly publicised offences, Cleveland police said
yesterday.
For more than a year, the killer had maintained his Innocence
pleading not guilty to the crime at a pre-trial review
of the case in February but changed his mind after
writing 11 days ago to a man identified only as Mr Patrick
Mahoney.
The last of his 36 letters to the Basildon man was passed
on by the correspondent to The News of the World newspaper
which, in turn, contacted Cleveland police. Det Insp Kevin
Robson said yesterday the letter to Mr Mahoney had been
verified by forensic scientists as having been written
by Blenkey who was awaiting trial in Holme House prison,
Stockton.
"In the letter, he moved from his position and said
he must have invited the boy into the chicken hut and
he must have strangled him," said Mr Robson. Cleveland
police said Mr Mahoney had contacted the killer after
his arrest last year and had struck up a rapport with
him during their long correspondence.
He even once visited Blenkey while he was in prison awaiting
trial. Police said that, in his early letters to Mr Mahoney,
Blenkey maintained he was being "fitted up"
for the crime, claiming repeatedly the murder had been
committed by a man called Mr Punk.
"We believe Mr Punk never existed and that Blenkey
was recounting the event and putting Mr Punk in his place."
Basildon police said last night they were aware of a local
man whom they knew as Mr Bernard O'Mahoney and who corresponded
with prisoners to sell their stories to newspapers.
A spokesman said Mr O'Mahoney began the practice in 1989,
when he began to visit Ronnie Kray in Broadmoor. |
