01/06/01 - Something good has
to come from Anna's death
DON MACKAY
The Mirror
THE killers and parents of murdered Anna Climbie may give
evidence at the public inquiry into her death.
Lord Laming, who will head the investigation, said yesterday:
"I have a very strong commitment to ensure that something
good comes out of the tragedy of her life and death and
to ensure that tragedies of this kind will be prevented."
The eight-year-oldsuffered 128 injuries from beatings.
Her hands and feet were bound with masking tape, and
for months she slept naked in a bath until she froze
to death last year in a squalid flat in Tottenham, North
London. Formally opening the inquiry in London, Lord
Laming said the child's auntMarie-Therese Kouao and
Kouao's lover Carl Manning, now serving life for murder,
have been asked to co-operate.
He added: "I am glad to say we have already received
a very positive response from Manning and we expect
to receive the same from Kouao."
Anna's parents may be flown to Britain from the Ivory
Coast when the inquiry starts hearing evidence in September.
The probe centres on blunders by health authorities, hospitals,
social services and police.
