11/12/01 - SARAH JURORS TOLD: BE BRAVE
By IAN HEPBURN and MARTIN WALLACE
The Sun

JURORS in the Sarah Payne murder trial yesterday retired to consider their verdict after the judge told them: "Deciding a case like this requires courage."

Mr Justice Curtis said in his summing up of the evidence against mechanic Roy Whiting: "You have probably never come across a case like this in your life. I unfortunately have." He urged the nine men and three women not to "shrink" from their task and to stay "calm and dispassionate" in deliberations.

Mechanic Whiting, 42, denies the kidnap and murder of eight-year-old Sarah who vanished as she played near her grandparents' home in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex. Her naked body was found 16 days later in a shallow grave.

The judge said it was "vital" for the jury of nine men and three women to decide for themselves WHY she was killed. He said: "Is it a necessary and proper deduction of all the pieces of evidence that she was murdered for an abnormal sexual reason or to cover up a sexual offence?"

He added: "Apply above all your common sense to the evidence before you." Last night the jury were sent to a hotel.

They will continue considering their verdict today at Lewes Crown Court.
