09/06/03 - Sarah's killer refuses to talk about her death

The family of Sarah Payne have been left disappointed after her killer refused to answer questions about her final hours. Detectives from Sussex Police travelled to Wakefield Prison to interview Roy Whiting in the hope of easing the torment of Sarah's parents Sara and Michael.

They wanted to know how long Whiting kept the eight-year-old alive after he snatched her from a country lane close to her grandparents' home in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex, in July 2000. But Whiting, who has now been moved to another jail after being slashed across the face by a fellow inmate at Wakefield, refused to answer questions.

Instead he remained silent, just as he did when first arrested by police and questioned about Sarah's disappearance and subsequent death three years ago. Sarah's mother Sara said: "He never spoke before so I did not really expect him to speak now.

We never believed a word the man said so in some ways it doesn't make any difference what he says now." And Sarah's grandfather Terry Payne said: "It just goes to prove what sort of man he is. "There are some things we may not have wanted to hear but for Michael and Sara there are many questions that remain unanswered. In many ways, when this man took that young life he took our lives with him."

Sarah's parents hoped to find out more about Whiting's actions, including what he did with her clothes and what happened to her in the days before her body was found in a shallow grave near Pulborough. Their hopes were raised when Whiting, convicted at Lewes Crown Court of Sarah's kidnap and murder, agreed to meet detectives.
