27/10/92 - Sex killer went to babysit after strangling boy

SEX beast Richard Blenkey strangled a boy of seven - then went off to babysit two friends of his victim. The jobless hotel worker later returned to the chicken hut where he had murdered Paul Pearson to dump the body in a ravine.

Blenkey, 33, was yesterday jailed for life. The court heard he lured Paul into the hut on his allotment and stripped and sexually assaulted him. He then beat the boy about the face and strangled him with gardening twine, said prosecutor Stephen Williamson QC.

An hour later Blenkey arrived to babysit Paul's pal lan Ramsdale, ten, and brother Craig, six. He left to hide Paul's body and his bike. But the body was discovered next day clumsily redressed and the bike was found with Blenkey's palm print on it.

Paul died just two weeks after his parents Julie and Ken, both 31, moved to the village of Marske, Cleveland, believing it was safer for their four children. They choked back tears as they heard the evidence at Teesside Crown Court.

Judge Mr Justice Blofeld said Blenkey, of nearby Saltburn, should be detained for at least 20 years because of his "morbid interest" in young boys. Blenkey lured a boy into woods 14 years ago but was fought off.

He denied murder but on the first day of his trial yesterday changed his plea to guilty. Julie said after the case: "The sooner capital punishment is brought back the better."

Blenkey kept his evil a secret from June Ramsdale and husband Tom during the four years he was their babysitter. He treated their boys to day trips and gifts but did not harm them.
