22/11/01 - Social worker describes anguish over tragic Victoria

A social worker who closed the file on child abuse victim Victoria Climbie a week before she died has told of her deep anguish. Lisa Arthurworrey, who worked at Haringey Council, sent a closing letter to eight-year-old Victoria's guardians.

Marie Therese Kouao and her boyfriend Carl Manning were jailed for life in January this year for Victoria's murder. Miss Arthurworrey, in a statement to the inquiry in central London into Victoria's death, said the case had left her close to breakdown and suffering from chronic insomnia and depression.

Victoria, who died in February last year, was found with 128 separate injuries to her body after suffering months of torture in one of Britain's worst child abuse cases.

After discussing the case with her immediate superiors Miss Arthurworrey sent a letter to Kouao and also telephoned a police officer involved in the case to inform them the case was being closed.

In her statement, Miss Arthurworrey said: "I feel physically sick at the thought of the abuse that Victoria suffered which ultimately resulted in her death. "I did not used to have any health problems but now I suffer from chronic insomnia and depression.

"I feel that I have become almost obsessed with Victoria's case. I keep playing my involvement with her over and over in my head like a continuous tape."

Miss Arthurworrey is currently suspended from Haringey Council but she said she had been "scapegoated" by the media and the council.
