16/01/02 - Social worker 'sorry'
Daily Record

A SOCIAL work boss yesterday begged for forgiveness from the parents of murdered eight-year-old Victoria Climbie.

Carol Baptiste, 39, said she "deeply regretted" her part in the little girl's death and said she "ought to have looked at the case more thoroughly" .

Victoria died in February 200 with 128 separate injuries to her body.

Her great aunt, Marie Therese Kouao, 45, and her lover Carl Manning, 29, are both serving life sentences for the murder.

Baptiste, of Haringey Council, north London, earlier failed to answer a summons to give evidence at an inquiry into the murder. She now faces prosecution.

The inquiry has heard she failed to manage key social worker Lisa Arthurworrey.

When she finally gave evidence yesterday, Baptiste read a note to the Climbie family which said: "I regret Victoria's voice was not heard and nobody will fully understand the pain she suffered."

But she blamed the council for her failings as a manager.

The hearing continues.
