12/12/01 - THE DAY SARAH DISAPPEARED
By Neil Roberts
The Mirror

Sarah Payne went missing while playing hide and seek with brothers Lee, 14, Luke, 13, and sister Charlotte, six. She and her family were visiting their grandparents who lived nearby.

The eight-year-old was snatched from a lane in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex on July 1 2000. Tragically, her brother Lee was just a few seconds behind Sarah who had run away from her siblings after a minor argument.

Lee went after her, but was only in time to see a white van driving away from the scene of her abduction. He saw the driver, who he later described to police. A search for the little girl was launched within hours. Police and volunteers scoured the countryside for more than two weeks.

Massive media coverage started immediately, making her face well known to everyone in the country - but as time went on hope began to fade. Sarah's body was eventually discovered in a shallow grave near the A29 at Pulborough, West Sussex 17 days later.

Roy Whiting was arrested on the evening of July 2 - one day after Sarah went missing - but was later released on police bail after Sarah's brother Lee could not pick him out of an identity parade. He was rearrested on July 31 and finally taken into custody on January 24 2001.
