27/09/01 - Tragic lesson of
hope
PATRICK MULCHRONE
The Mirror
THE shocking life and death of little Victoria
Climbie will be a turning point for child protection,
it was declared yesterday.
The appalling details of her killing at the hands of a
brutal aunt and her partner were revealed to her parents
at a public inquiry.
Chairman Lord Laming's recommendations will shape the
way that the police, NHS and social services - all criticised
at the murder trial - work with children in the future.
Eight-year-old Victoria was known as Anna to Marie
Therese Kouao, 44, and boyfriend Carl Manning, 28, who
were jailed for life in January for her murder last
year.
The tragic little girl froze to death after being subjected
to cruelty beyond belief, the trial heard.
Yesterday was the first public phase of the inquiry,
which opened in south London in May.
Lord Laming said what happened to Victoria will be
an "enduring turning point for securing proper
protection of children in this country".
The inquiry continues. |
