13/12/01 - Top shrink decided: He's NOT a paedophile
By MARTIN WALLACE
The Sun

A TOP psychiatrist made an amazing blunder by deciding that Roy Whiting was NOT a paedophile. Dr Anthony Farrington examined Whiting five years before he kidnapped Sarah Payne.

He was awaiting sentence after trying to force THREE young girls into his car and sexually abusing one of them a girl of nine. Dr Farrington concluded in an official report given to the trial judge 'His sexual orientation is basically heterosexual and directed towards adult women. He is not a paedophile.

He has no treatable mental disorder and I do not have any recommendation for the court.' Whiting tried to snatch the girls near a park in his home town of Crawley. He bundled his victim into his red Sierra and drove to a wood.

He threatened her with a knife and forced her to strip. Then Whiting carried out a vile assault and dumped her at the roadside. Dr Farrington examined him while he was on remand in prison. The psychiatrist was not entirely fooled and warned that Whiting would probably strike again.

But having read his report Judge John Gower sentenced Whiting to a mere four years at Lewes Crown Court on June 23 1995. He served only two years and eight months. Dr Farrington is now semi-retired and works three days a week for the Health Service Ombudsman in London.

When he interviewed Whiting he was a visiting consultant psychiatrist at Lewes. In his study, he wrote of Whiting: "He denies any sexual attraction to children of either sex." Whiting told him he had his first sexual experience at 16.

He said that apart from his failed marriage he had brief relationships with three other women. But he refused to discuss the crime. Dr Farrington said in his report: "I conclude that Whiting does not have any formal mental disorder.

His offending behaviour shows an impulsive act, but backed up by advance preparation. "He had a knife with which he threatened his victim and produced rope with which he threatened to tie her up." The report went on: "He has a low sexual drive and feels sex is not a high priority in his life. He denies any sexual attraction to children of either sex."

Dr Farrington said it was difficult to predict if Whiting would attack again but concluded: "He is a relatively high risk of re-offending." A warning that Whiting posed a future danger was also given to the judge by probation officer Colin Fordham.

He wrote: "Whiting realises he must be at risk of further offending." Answering criticism of his verdict on Whiting; Dr Farrington said at his home in Sheffield: "To make a diagnosis of someone being a paedophile you have to show they have had an interest in children for six months.

That is why I said he was not a paedophile. "You don't see a lot of people like Whiting. He is, fortunately, a rarity."
