26/04/02 - Victoria Climbie
inquiry closes to compile report

An inquiry into the brutal death of eight- year-old Victoria
Climbie finally ended on Friday after having heard testimony
from more than 120 experts into one of Britain's most
shocking cases of child abuse.
Frontline staff working in social services, doctors,
police and cabinet ministers all contributed to a discussion
aimed at better protecting young children and avoiding
further tragic cases.
Victoria died in February 2000 with 128 injuries on
her body from being beaten, burnt with cigarettes and
scalded.
She had been forced to sleep naked in a bath with only
a bin liner to cover her.
Her great-aunt Marie Therese Kouao, 44, and boyfriend
Carl Manning, 28, were jailed for life a year ago for
murdering and torturing Victoria, who had come to Britain
from Ivory Coast with Kouao with her parents' blessing
as they sought a better life for her.
Victoria died despite regular intervention and contact
with social workers.
Her mother Berthe said in February: "The people I
blame, really, are the agencies in this country.''
The inquiry's final report is expected to be delivered
to the government later this year. |
