- Victoria kept bound in freezing bathroom
A pathologist has told the Victoria Climbie inquiry how
she died of hypothermia after being kept naked and bound
in a freezing bathroom. Victoria, eight, died in February
2000 with 128 separate injuries to her body after being
starved and beaten with coathangers and bicycle chains.
She had been bound naked and kept prisoner in a freezing
bathroom and left to sit in her own urine and faeces.
A post-mortem carried out by Home Office pathologist Dr
Nathaniel Carey concluded that she died from hypothermia.
He told the inquiry into her death after Britain's child
protection services missed at least 12 chances to save
her. "She was malnourished. She was in a very damp
environment and her movement was limited through being
bound up - all these would act to prevent the body from
being able to maintain its temperature.
"If you then combine that with a cold, damp environment
such as you would get in a bath, wet clothing, you have
an effect that is really very similar to being lost on
the hills with no food and getting what is called exposure."
In January this year Marie Therese Kouao, 44, Victoria's
great aunt, and her boyfriend Carl Manning, 28, who called
her Anna, were jailed for life for murder. |
