01/10/01 - Victoria killer beaten 'to within inch of life'
STEPHEN MOYES
The Mirror

VENGEFUL prisoners battered the killer of eight-year-old Victoria Climbie to "within an inch of his life".
Hated Carl Manning, 28, was beaten so mercilessly he was left for dead. Blood stained the walls and corridor of his jail wing.

A prison source said yesterday: "The attack lasted for 10 minutes and at the end no one was sure if he was breathing or not. The cons were disgusted at Manning's treatment of Victoria and hit him with anything they could find. He was beaten to within aninch of his life."

The attack by about five men took place in A wing at Wakefield jail where Manning is serving life.

Last night, the killer was recovering in the jail health centre. The Prison Service confirmed that an attack was being investigated. Victoria, of Tottenham, North London, died last year after being starved, beaten and bound by her great aunt MarieTherese Kouao, 44, and her boyfriend Manning.

She had 128 injuries. Kouao was also jailed for life for murder.

A relative of Kouao tried to save Victoria's life with an anonymous tip-off to Brent Council, an inquiry will hear today. But there was no subsequent investigation.
