28/08/02 - Worker in abuse
girl case is fined by judge
Daily Record
THE social worker in charge of murdered Victoria
Climbie was yesterday fined pounds 500 for refusing to
turn up at the public inquiry into her death.
Judge Hayden Gott rejected 39-year-old Carole Baptiste's
defence that she had been mentally unfit.
Instead, he ruled the reason Baptiste failed to appear
was because of her own "compromising personality".
Baptiste hasn't worked since leaving Haringey social
services in north London.
She was the manager in charge of eight-year-old Victoria's
case before she died in February 2000.
Baptiste is the first person to be prosecuted for failing
to appear at a public inquiry. Camberwell magistrates
heard that she had suffered "psychotic episodes".
But the judge ruled she had recovered sufficiently
when she was called to give evidence. He said: "This
was a major inquiry into the tragic death of a young
person.
"You were an important witness, and you failed
to cooperate. The determining fact of your failure to
cooperate was your own compromising personality."
Victoria Climbie died after eight months of torture
at the hands of her great aunt and her lover, who are
both serving life for her murder.
Councils, police and doctors involved in her case have
all been criticised. |
